Walt Disney Studios has just released the first trailer for Rob Marshall's live-action film The Little Mermaid.

The new trailer depicts beautiful underwater settings as Ariel, played by Halle Bailey, explores caverns and sings a verse from Alan Menken's timeless tune "Part of Your World."

Bailey is joined by other big names such as Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), who voices the red crab Sebastian, Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) playing King Triton, and Awkwafina (Shang-Chi) cast as the seagull Scuttle. Also worth mentioning is that Melissa McCarthy (Spy) plays Ursula, Bailey's main antagonist.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Marc Platt, Marshall, and John DeLuca will co-produce the new Disney film, while Alan Menken returns to create original music for the project.

Here's an official synopsis from Disney:

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The Little Mermaid is scheduled to release in theaters on May 26, 2023. In the coming months, keep an eye out for more trailers and information.
